Former (hed) P.E. and Korn guitarist Wes Geer founded Rock to Recovery on 12-12-2012 in an effort to bring a new and unique type of music expression group into treatment centers -by forming a band! Together the band writes and performs a song, finally recording it at the end of each session. The program is designed so that ‘non-musicians’ can access the magic, healing, uplifting powers of writing and playing music. “Music is a language we are encoded with before we even exit the womb. Put on a song and a toddler will start singing, even dancing.” -Wes
Rock to Recovery gives people the outlet to challenge themselves and channel the music that’s deep in their soul, many for the first time. Rock to Recovery is the vehicle to help bring it out of them. Connecting to this creative, Higher-Self force reminds participants that there is a hopeful, happy, playful, part of their Self still inside. For those struggling with PTSD, TBI, addiction, mental health, etc., it may have been years since having this part of Self activated. Those in the early days of recovery can enjoy the therapeutic release that only music can provide. The participants feel a part of, grow self esteem, walk through fears, inhibitions, escape their woes, to come out the other side with a totally new vibration.
People in recovery can start becoming activated, re-connecting to people thru the process, as playing music does organically, what psych meds do, helping to stimulate serotonin, dopamine, endorphins, and oxytocin (the ‘’love molecule’) naturally. Rock to Recovery typically operates as an adjunct service to a treatment center’s curriculum. Since it’s inception, Rock to Recovery has been integrated as part of over one hundred treatment programs.
“I went through a rehab program, I know what it feels like. Playing my guitar was such a vibe changer for our whole milieu. We would get so silly writing songs, singing dancing on breaks. Walls would come down. The day’s struggle would fade away. I wanted a way to bring that energy to everyone that enters a treatment program. The results have been beyond anything we ever could have imagined. Watching the hopeless find hope, the lost feel purpose, the self-loathing find confidence, the miserable, dark-minded find their light and laughter again; these transformations are nothing short of magic.” -Wes
Rock to Recovery has for-profit and non-profit entities. The company uses the NPO to donate services to treatment programs that otherwise would not be able to access their services. As a result Rock to Recovery has started doing fundraising concerts and holiday events.
The concerts honor rockstars with the ‘Rock to Recovery Award’ for their service, and success in overcoming addiction, and assisting others in the community. Past recipients have been Mike Ness (Social Distortion), Wayne Kramer (MC5) and Corey Taylor (Slipknot, Stonesour). These sober events have provided a unique resource for hope and fun in the recovery community as well as been supported by members from Guns n Roses, Stone Temple Pilots, Billy Idol, Jane’s Addiction, Fred Durst (Limp Bizkit), Mark McGrath (Sugar Ray) and the late Chester Bennington (Linkin Park) to name a few.
