You’ve done Dry July. You’ve done Sober October. You’ve had a hundred Day Ones. So why does nothing ever actually stick?
In this episode, we’re talking about one of the most common phrases I hear from people who want to change their relationship with alcohol:
“I’m taking a break.”
Whether it’s Dry July, Sober October, 30 days without alcohol, or simply pressing pause after another rough weekend, taking a break can absolutely be valuable.
In fact, I believe those breaks often become some of our greatest teachers.
But a break and a decision are not the same thing.
In this episode, I explain why so many people can stop drinking for weeks or even months, only to find themselves right back where they started.
We’ll explore how your brain turns a successful break into “proof” that you have control, when the evidence may actually be pointing in the opposite direction.
I also share one of my favorite sayings from recovery: “It takes every single drink it takes to finally get sober.”
That doesn’t mean relapse is required. It means every attempt has something to teach you—if you’re willing to pay attention.
In this episode:
00:00 Why taking a break from alcohol isn’t the same as quitting
02:45 The real reason most people start Dry July or Sober October
05:40 Why your brain uses a successful break as permission to drink again
07:10 The AA saying that completely changes how you think about relapse
09:30 The moment you stop negotiating with alcohol
10:55 Why highly successful people struggle to accept they’re an alcoholic
13:20 The dangerous hope that keeps people stuck after 30-day challenges
15:00 How to know when you’ve moved from “taking a break” to making a real decision
17:10 One question that will tell you exactly where you are in your sobriety journey
If you’ve ever completed Dry July, Sober October, or another alcohol-free challenge only to end up drinking again, this conversation will help you understand why.
More importantly, it’ll help you see that those experiences weren’t wasted.
Every attempt teaches you something.
The question is: Are you gathering evidence… or are you preparing to make a decision?
